Jointer Tuneup
Andrew Buchner

Noticed the jointer seem to be cutting a little oddly. The outfeed table had sank down below the knives, putting horrible snipe on the end of any piece and some nasty vibration/shaking. I replaced the knives, reset the table, and re-squared the fence to the table. Overall, the tables seem to be sagging at their ends, and a straight edge cannot lie flat across them. The outfeed table is also at a slightly different angle to the fence than the infeed. I know both of these issues may be able to be corrected with brass shims, but it might not be a permanent fix.

If I had to pick one tool in the Industrial Arts Room to upgrade now, it would be this jointer. Its served us very well over the years, but its time may be coming. I will be looking at options online, new or used. Based on the space we have, a 6" jointer with a bed under 60" in length would be best, please let me know if you see anything promising out there.
