Communication about Firing Schedule
Olivia McKay

I saw a note in the clayspace that says that there is a firing planned for Feb 7th (yay!!). Myself and some other members won’t have enough time to glaze for that date and we’re hoping it could be pushed back so that we can have our stuff included. Maybe the 11th?

In the same vein, Amanda and I had communicated via FB that there would be a bisque today, but there was already one running yesterday. Some of my stuff didn’t get included because it needed another day to dry and I was a bit frustrated! 😅 I’m super happy that the kiln and clayspace are getting so much use and I’m wondering if we can discuss how it might be best to communicate about firing schedules so it works for all members 😊 I know that FB isn’t accessible to everyone, so if that means we use the forum to make plans for firing that would be a great solution!

Hi Olivia,

yes… a posting would have been the right thing for the bisque-my apologies. I was unaware that you and Amanda had made plans. The firing took place because after the meeting, on Wednesday, as it was confirmed that the kiln vent was not venting. I saw this as an opportunity to fire the bisque that night so as to not be firing while others were going to be actively using the space over the weekend so I went ahead with it. I did see your pots and felt they had a few more days to dry…certainly frustrating to have missed the unscheduled bisque. I was trying to line up that firing so that members would have time to glaze for the Feb. 7th glaze firing. It looks like my enthusiasm has breached the courtesy of notification so again… my apologies. I’ll leave the firing dates to you and Amanda.

It's a little cumbersome, but I've started to cross-post announcements on the FB page and the forums. I feel like the FB page gets more immediate engagement, but I know not everyone is on it.

Hi Karen,

Your enthusiasm is awesome and exactly what we need! I think it’s helpful to have peoples hands available, and while I can’t speak for Amanda, I think that we both want you to continue to be a part of firing the kiln. Maybe we can start a continuous thread on the Clayspace forum page dedicated to communication about firing the kiln so that everyone is in the loop? I recognize that I should have tried to make plans this way initially, rather than using FB.

Communication is always cumbersome but it is an important tool for community building and I hope that it will eventually help facilitate more ease. Lemme know what you think!

Hi Olivia,

yup… we’ll get it all figured out somehow. The forum seems central so yes… maybe that’s the way.
