New Clayspace Workflow and Expectations
Author Last Post

Hi all!

I think the clayspace soft open was mostly successful.

When going into the clayspace please remember that without a makerspace there is no clayspace and if try to find a way to help out!

We're going to need to order clay soon and prices have gone up. The total price (which includes firing) has yet to be determined,

Stay tuned.

In the meanwhile,

1) Bisque on the 11,

Then we will know if the made the move ok,

2) fundraiser going to happen in March, I'd like to use up the last of the Laguna speckle, and make items to be included with ticket price (it fires at a different temperature, so that's a hassle)

3) the buckets for rinsing are a bit tricky, but I really appreciate how well folks have been taking the time to keep the clay out of the plumbing.

Great, thanks Karen! my original intent was that we would only pull the third wheel out if two is not enough, a way to store the batts would be great. it's going to be a challenge to get the storage sorted out, but the more specific designated places there are for items the better.

Merry Christmas all

Hi Amanda,

Hope the festive season is treating you well. I dropped into the clay space and tweaked the room a bit, to accommodate all 3 wheels across the back wall. I’ve done a quick inventory of glazes and loose chemicals and sorted through the rolling tool organizer. Hoping to hang the clay extruder, and install some dowel racks to hold the wooden bats for easier access while throwing. For now the wedging table is in the middle of the room… it may serve as our work table until we can figure out better placement, or slimmer work surfaces.

cheers

We have a new space! so things are going to be a little different than at the old space. It's smaller, and as such we will have to be more judicious about the allocation of space. (Get comfy, it's a long read!)

1) We are a volunteer organization and you are expected to contribute to the maintenance of the organization Without the makerspace there is no Clayspace. Clay space specific tasks are identified in tape around the room. we also need people to run fundraisers and event organization, participate in the build out of the other workspaces.

2) Clay must be purchased though the makerspace. The cost includes some money to cover kiln expenses.

3) Use only the provided glazes, and make a donation proportional to the cost of the glaze. (Each 475 ml bottle costs approximately $30) We hopefully be able to transition away from purchased glazes soon to a very limited selection of mixed glazes. members who want something other than the options in the buckets will need to approval to have the glaze in the space.

4) There are 12 cubbies for personal clay/tools/glazes, if you are current member who is actively using the clayspace you are welcome to store your clay in a cubby, you may wish to install a divider within the cubby- a sideways clay box works well. Label it with your name and phone number. Cubbies occupied by inactive members will be emptied within 1 month unless alternative arrangements are made.

5) There is one rack for work in progress. Items which you are working on which are not ready to dry/fire may be stored here on the conditions that

a) you are actively working in them.

b) they are clearly labelled with your name, phone number and the date. UFO's will be recycled.

c) the date is less than one month old. Items which have not been updated in more than a month will receive a red dot.

4) There is a rack for firing progress. from bottom up they are greenware, bisque, glaze,

once a month we will red dot bisque ware which hasn't been glazed. If it is still there the next month it will be discarded.

5) Finished works will be places on the shelf to the right of the kiln. Work not claimed within 3 weeks of firing will receive a red dot. After 1 month these will be placed in a give away bin, and eventually the trash.

6) To protect the kiln, glaze must not come in contact with the shelves. If you think that the glaze may run, use a clay disk (cookie) between the shelf and your work. (making your own cookies with your marks is encouraged)

7) Works must have an identifiable makers mark, if your mark is something other than your name, please put a photo or drawing of it on your cubby. Works which damage the kiln shelves through dripping or jumping glazes will incur a fine.

8) WE HAVE NO SINK - DO NOT USE THE BATHROOM SINK FOR WASHING. It will clog.

Scoop off clay into the recycling bucket if you aren't recycling your own.

Use bucket 1 for the initial rinse, to get the majority of the clay off, and then a second bucket for a final rinse.

When you arrive, scoop off the water from the top of the first bucket if it's clear, and dump it out.

We will continue to use a variation on this system even after a sink is installed- it uses far less water and reduces the frequency of trap maintenance.

9) Share the wins! Show off your work on social media with #kamloopsmakerspace, connect through the forum or the fb groups with other members (ask me for an invite if you need it!)

10) Share the work- if there's an issue, or a deficiency in the space, please bring a suggested solution that you can help implement along with the report. That includes this list. If you have an idea for a system or procedure that would be better*, Please share!

*better almost always means less administrative/inhouse tasks.
