Hi everyone I’m Travis and I’ve been a maker for as long as I can remember.
I grew up Quensel, BC. In my 20’s and 30’s I went to school for way too long and was lucky enough to travel all over the world. I am educated as a Marine Biologist and am an experienced project manager. I own a company that offers consulting and project/event management services to the scientific community. Currently, I am going back to school to become a certified teacher.
I come from a family full of makers and tradespeople – including mechanics, welders, carpenters, bakers, and chefs. I have tried my best to carry this tradition on and do a lot of different types of making. I am a skilled woodworker and metalworker and have 20+ years of experience in cooking, which was my main side hustle while going to school. I love doing anything with food and drink, and I am skilled as a brewer, butcher, and baker. I am versed in mechanical repair and some electrical work. Some of the projects that I am most proud of in my career are the pico-scale electric brewery I built, a walnut storage chest I built for my mother, and my latest computer – a small form factor PC that I am slowly tinkering with to make even smaller! Finally, I am a podcast producer that is well skilled in audacity and am slowly teaching myself Adobe audition.
Currently, I am mostly interested in anything that helps me avoid waste and helps me make my apartment homier and more unique. In the kitchen I have gotten heavily into home preserving: canning, jelly making, sausage making and meat fermenting/curing/smoking. In the workshop I am interested in furniture making and cabinetry.
I’m always happy to help and offer up advice and assistance as necessary. I am hoping to learn more about the space and how I can be involved.
I am looking forward to meeting all you makers in person as we get out of this whole COVID thing.
Kindest Regards,
Travis Nielsen
