Swamp Cooler is Ready for the Year
Author Last Post

Came into the apace last night and found the swamp cooler running and all the windows closed.

Okay, so what this did was sure, the lounge went down to 25c which sounds a lot more enjoyable, however the humidity went way up to 60%, at which point you cancel out the cooler by making it really humid. It was 30 outside but it felt like a muggy 30 inside with the humidity.

I opened all the windows and the front doors (remember we can do that now that we have a latching gate) and after an hour we were up to 26c but we were down to a much more manageable 40% humidity.

If you are going to operate the swamp cooler, PLEASE open windows.

This evening I opened and started up the swamp cooler for the year. I did most of the belt and bearing maintenance last spring but we need to look into replacing the medium at one point as it's falling apart.

PLEASE NOTE THIS

You MUST open the windows when operating it. Multiple times last summer I came into the space to find all the windows closed and the swamp cooler running. All this does is make the building hot, humid and muggy. Prolonged high humidity will also damage most of our laser cut wood projects and our 3D printer filament. If you are concerned about bugs and birds getting in, here's a good idea: Make some screen inserts for the windows and let the building draft during the night.

Edited: that being said I have not taken the plastic off the windows because given how slow the space has been in the last 12 months it's entirely possible we won't be busy enough in the space to actually need the swamp cooler. Because the front steps are now gated in you can just prop the door open and turn the fan on and that will draft all the air we want through the first floor without strangers potentially walking in.
